Has international student numbers recovered so far in New Zealand?

Covid’s impact was seen everywhere including on the immigration of countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK.

Not only the permanent residency, skilled workers, visitors, family visas but also student visas were greatly impacted by the Covide-19 Pandemic.

New Zealand, a country which receives tons of applications form international students has seen a decline in the applications at the time of covid.

Usually there are more than 120,000 international students who enrolled in New Zealand’s colleges and Universities before Covid-19 but after the borders were closed, the country has only seen the decline in these numbers.

Less than 15,000 international student visas were issued as of 31 July 2022. This was a very sharp decline in the international student numbers.

However, four months ago when New Zealand’s borders were opened, the number of applications from international  students reached thousands.

The country opened its borders after a long period of two years after the pandemic was over. New Zealand’s schools and colleges are welcoming the international students .

But the main question in everyone’s mind is that: Has international student numbers recovered so far in New Zealand? And When will they recover?

Thousands of applications from international students were submitted to New Zealand’s schools and colleges by international students for upcoming programs.

But the New Zealand educators will select fewer applicants than they selected in 2020 as the application volumes suggest.

Before the covid New Zealand was one of the most competitive and popular English Speaking destinations for immigrants.

When international student enrolment started to decline in 2017, it was due to  the planned rebalancing strategy of the New Zealand government.

But the decline in the international student numbers after covid was far more than anyone can imagine. This also made the revenue of New Zealand go down from NZ $1.2 billion toNZ $963 million in 2020. And NZ $594 in 2021.

But after the borders were opened in July 2022, more than 12,000 international students have applied and 7,731 applications have been processed so far.

2023 enrollments may not be at the levels of the post Covid period, but the they are hoping that the conditions will get normal after some time.
