For New Zealand, to fill the workforce gap with skilled Immigrants is not a solution- economist
Shamubeel Eaqub, a leading economist said that, New Zealand governments never had a proper dissussion about the role of immgrtaion in country.
This lack of disssuions has caused a uncertainty for both immigrants and businesses in the country.
Shamubeel Eaqub, from Sense Partners said that immigration is not a permanent solution for skilled gaps in the country. For critical sectors like healthcare, having immigrants to fill the workforce gap is beneficial but having too much immigrants in every sector is not good.
The current economy can be affected due to the looseing immigartion settings in New Zealand. Country is dependent on immigrants for long time to fill the gaps. But it is a fact that with increased people, their demands will also increase which will affect the country.
He also said that job advertisements across the business community had begun to fall late last year which means that country is not in the urgent need of the workers. Also it is not required to rush the immigration policies and open borders.
He said this after the new prime minister’s meeting with the business leaders in Auckland. In his meeting the PM Chris Hipkins, said that changes to immigration policies in a attempt to ease worker shortages, were a definite possibility.
The new PM Chris Hipkins, has a meeting with Auckland Business Chamber about his party’s method to tackle the inflation and labour shortages issues.
Many cheif exectives from business chamber told PM that worker shortage was their main concern. They want a permannet solution for the shortage of the skilled workers.
Hipkins said that he and his party don;t want ant further changes and and want a balance between the immigartion settings and invigorating local workers across the country.
But according to Eaqub New Zealand never has a proper dissusion about immigration and its role. He said that the country need a proper structure regarding the immigration settings.
Immigration is used as a plotical tool to deal with the problems at hand like worker shortage, population growth or economic growth. The immigrants are used by the government according to their needs like political chess pieces.
To create more certainity among the immigrants, governement need to provide a proper structure for the immigrants.
