The highest-ever target for permanent residents' admission in Canada in 2022
430,000 new permanent residents were admitted in the past year to Canada. This was the highest number ever.
IRCC announced the record-breaking target for admission of permanent residents in Canada in 2022.
A new target of 431,645 permanent residents in 2022 surpassed the record of 2021. This was the highest number of permanent residents ever arrived in Canada.
According to Sean Fraser, Immigration minister Canada, the country is marking an important milestone. A new record is being set for newcomers welcomed in the past year.
He also stated that these newcomers play an essential role in reducing the gap in the labour market. People are excited to see the changes the new immigrants bring in 2023.
A total of 5.2 million applications were processed by IRCC in 2022. These applications include applications for permanent residence, temporary residence and citizenship.
For fast processing of the applications, the IRCC credited new resources, technology and streamlined processing. A total of $50 million was committed by the Canadian Government to IRCC for 2022-23.
The labour force of Canada is almost dependent on immigrants. There are over a million vacancies in Canada, and the country is facing a labour shortage due to the workforce the country is ageing.
For the Canadian economy, immigrants are vital. It is reported that around nine million Canadians will reach the age of retirement in 2030. This retiring population will cause a huge workforce gap in the country.
Almost 75% of the growth of the Canadian population depends upon migrants, as Canada has the lowest global birth rates.
To boost the Canadian population, Canada is welcoming a higher number of immigrants in recent years. It is expected that around 36% of the Canadian population will be immigrants by 2036.
The new immigration plans released in November for 2023-25 target 500,000 new immigrants as permanent residents each year by 2025.
