Starting in October, Ukrainians in Canada will be able to apply for permanent residency
On Saturday, the government of Canada made the announcement that it will be introducing a new avenue in the month of October to allow Ukrainians who are currently living in Canada to apply for permanent residence.
Ukrainians living in Canada who have temporary residence status and at least one member of their family already residing in Canada will be eligible to take advantage of the new pathway beginning on the 23rd day of October, 2023. According to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), additional information will be made available in the weeks leading up to the program's official start in October.
According to the information provided by IRCC, individuals who will be eligible for the program include spouses, common-law partners, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children or grandchildren of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are of Ukrainian descent.
Until March 31, 2024, citizens of Ukraine in possession of a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa will have the opportunity to travel to Canada as part of the temporary extraordinary measures being made available by the government of Canada. On July 15, Canada ceased accepting new applications for the CUAET; however, Ukrainians and members of their families may still apply for a temporary resident visa (TRV) to enter Canada.
Once they have entered Canada with a TRV, Ukrainians and their families will have the ability to extend their stays for up to three years through open work permits and study permits, both of which will be prioritized by IRCC. In addition to this, individuals will have access to settlement services such as training in the target language and support in finding employment.
Over 166,000 Ukrainians have been able to immigrate to Canada thanks to the CUAET ever since it was established in March 2022.
