Important announcement for PGWP holders from Canada's minister of immigration

Canada's Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has announced a huge announcement for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders.

The PGWP holders' work permits have been extended by the Canadian government by up to 18 months. The immigration minister declared that beginning of April 6, 2023, persons whose post-graduation work permits are about to expire will be eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit extension.

Anyone whose PGWP expires in 2023 may apply for an Open Work Permit extension. Also eligible are those whose PGWPs expired in 2022 and who submitted an application for an Open Work Permit extension with the IRCC last year.

Candidates can submit an application for the extension on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website starting on April 6.

The applicants will receive an email with an interim work permit authorization after submitting their request for the extension, which they can use to continue working lawfully in Canada.

Post Graduate Work Permit:

International students who complete an approved educational program at a facility recognized by Canada may be eligible for post-graduation work permits (DLI). Colleges, universities, and other educational facilities that have received government approval to accept international students are included under DLI.

PGWPs give foreign graduates the freedom to work for any Canadian firm of their choice. They can only work for a total of three years.

International students highly prize PGWPs because of the structure of Canada's economic class immigration policies. Candidates who have studied and worked in Canada are frequently rewarded by these programs.

Normally, a PGWP cannot be extended. PGWP holders who wish to extend their employment in Canada are typically required to submit an application for a different kind of work permit as soon as their PGWP expires.

More than 286,000 foreign graduates were in Canada as of 2022 with valid post-graduation work permits, according to the Canadian Immigration Department. Roughly 67,000 PGWP holders have already sought permanent residency, so they won't need to renew their work permits through this scheme when their 127,000 PGWPs expire in 2023.
