New Zealand’s Visitor Visas for foreign visitors are the second most expensive globally
A study found that New Zealand's tourist visa is now the second most expensive in the world after the US.
Across all legal visa types, the average cost of a visitor visa is $170. Only people from 60 countries can get a cheaper New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) for $17 to $23, so most tourists have to pay the $211 normal visitor visa fee.
According to the report by William Russel Insurance, this was just $33 less than the average fee for a US tourist visa.
The fee for a non-immigrant visa in the US is the most expensive. It is going up from US$160 to US$185 ($296) at the end of this month. The ESTA program, which lets people from New Zealand travel to the US without a visa, also went up to $33 last year.
Even though New Zealand lets applicants put their partners and children on their travel papers, the average tourist visitor fee is still $26 less than in Australia.
Getting to New Zealand isn't the only thing that costs a lot. The New Zealand passport is the sixth most expensive in the world, according to the same study.
Even though New Zealand is going to raise the price of a 10-year passport next week, the most expensive travel paper by far is an Australian passport.
An Australian passport for an adult costs $346.50, which is eight times more than a Czech passport, which is the cheapest in the world at $42. Also, it is good for up to 10 years.
Some countries only give out IDs for five years. Even though a Swedish passport costs $246.33, it needs to be updated twice as often. This makes travel even more expensive than with an Australian passport, which already costs a lot to use.
On May 25, the price of a New Zealand passport for an adult will go up from $199 to $206. The price of a passport for a child will go up by $5 to $120.
Even though the price has gone up, the Department of Internal Affairs says that many new IDs will still be given out in the name of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
