Is Learning English Language Still Important in 2020?

With so many other things going around us, should spending time on improving communication skills in English still be our priority? Well, the answer might surprise you!

A group of employees was questioned “What’s the thing you regret the most in your life?”

The answer may or may not surprise you, but it was “Not paying proper attention to communication skills”.

Every person in life at some point or the other thinks where his life would have taken him if he had paid just a bit more attention on skill-sets important in the real world, as opposed to the curriculum which was the ‘basic centre of attraction’.

Undoubtedly, the students themselves are not completely at fault. There are several reasons which lead to this regret in students. The regret of not being able to communicate properly.

Flashback Time!

Now while we are talking about schools and education, there is again no denying the fact that not all the students feel the same level of difficulty in communicating.

Obviously, we all remember that one smart girl in the classroom – the favourite student of all teachers, who would excitedly raise her hand whenever a question was being asked, and the teacher would praise her for her courage to speak even if the answer wasn’t accurate.

And then, there was this ‘boy’ – the backbencher who would know the answer but wouldn’t speak out loud, fearing how others would react when he spoke, but deep down all of his friends and he would know who got the right answer!

Unsurprisingly, there is a combination of factors that affects the person’s communication skills, and these include but do not limit to family background, schooling, friend-circle, self-confidence, interest, cerebral brain structure, and so on.

Smart Kids v/s Intelligent Kids

So, we have all experienced being either of the students mentioned above and also know that life for one would always be simpler than for another.

No! It’s not.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), a student’s performance in school, or even high school isn’t an indicative of success at work.

However, in this regard, it has also been found out that those who paid more attention to co-curricular activities as compared to regular syllabus are more productive adults.

So what does this mean?

Well the crux is that your performance in school, or college can never decide your future. But it can definitely tell how easy it would be for you to bring about a change in yourself especially when it comes to learning something new.

This is so as one thing which we all agree on is that one’s communication skills come handy, whether it’s for a job or for personal life as well.

Wait! The topic is English Language, right? So why are we moving towards personality development and communication skills?

To be honest, the answer lies in the next section!

Why do we think of English Language as soon as it comes to Communication Skills?

At present, if you would ask someone to work on his communication skills, he would immediately ask you about an English Language Instructor. Why? Because communication means English!

It is quite common, especially in the developing countries for people to assume that the personality and communication skill of a person is good if he knows English.

Now this surely has everything to do with the fact that the most widely spoken language in the world in English, including both native and non-native speakers.

Though Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language but a major reason for this is China’s population and here there is going to be no denying the fact that English Language in terms of being ‘a popular’ one is unbeatable.

English as a matter of fact, is also the world’s largest international language, and this is the reason that most of the language proficiency tests around the world accepted for immigration purposes are in English Language.

When such a massive part of communication not just within the countries but all around the world is in this language, why wouldn’t one consider ‘English’ to be synonymous to ‘Communication’.

How does knowing English Language help in life?

Well, who wouldn’t want to be the part of such a big institution which is prevalent in every nook and corner of the world?

Not enough convincing? So read this:

“There are higher chances of success for the employees who communicate in English as compared to other non-english speaking employees. They are also less likely to stay unemployed because employers prefer English speaking employees over their counterparts.”

Asking or mentioning the source for the above-stated information would not make much difference as this is what the actual fact is.

In fact, it is the recognition of the popularity and importance of this language which has brought you here, and it’s all pretty obvious that English Language is going to help in one way or the other and knowing it always comes handy.
